Klutina River Fishing
Experience Alaska’s Glacial Wilderness at Salmon Grove Campground
The Klutina River is one of Southcentral Alaska’s most remarkable glacial waterways, offering world-class salmon fishing, unforgettable rafting adventures, and dramatic geological scenery in the Copper River Basin. Flowing 63 miles from Klutina Lake to its confluence with the Copper River, this turquoise glacial river delivers both excitement and serenity for anglers, rafters, and wilderness explorers alike.
Nestled directly along the riverbank, Salmon Grove Campground provides front-row access to the Klutina. Our office and property sit right on the water, allowing guests to step out of camp and into Alaska adventure within minutes.
Geological Wonders of the Klutina River
The Klutina River Valley is a living geological museum shaped by massive ice sheets during the last Ice Age. Retreating glaciers carved deep troughs through bedrock, forming Klutina Lake and the surrounding U-shaped valleys that define the landscape today. Meltwater continues to feed the river, creating its signature opaque turquoise color caused by suspended glacial sediment known as rock flour.
Visitors will encounter towering valley walls, canyon sections, braided channels, and expansive gravel bars that serve as salmon habitat, fishing access points, and wildlife corridors. Seasonal flooding and sediment movement constantly reshape the river, making every trip a unique experience.
World-Class Salmon Fishing
The Klutina River is internationally recognized for its strong and reliable salmon runs, serving as a vital migration route connecting the Gulf of Alaska to upstream spawning waters.
Sockeye Salmon — The Signature Run
Peak season runs from mid-June through mid-September, when thousands of bright red salmon move upriver, creating one of Alaska’s most productive fisheries.
King Salmon and Additional Species
Early summer also brings Chinook (King) salmon, offering anglers the chance to target Alaska’s largest salmon species. Other species occasionally encountered include Dolly Varden, rainbow trout, grayling, and whitefish.
