For those looking to fully immerse themselves in the backcountry, we also offer multi-day scenic rafting expeditions complete with camping equipment and logistical support. These trips are a fantastic way to experience the river while being surrounded by vast, untouched wilderness.

The Copper River Valley Experience

The Copper River Valley delivers a raw, glacier-fed rafting experience framed by the towering peaks of the Chugach and Wrangell–St. Elias mountain ranges. Expect wide braided channels, dramatic scenery, and prolific salmon runs. Rivers and tributaries to consider include the Copper River mainstem, Klutina River, Gulkana River, Tazlina River, and Tonsina River—each offering distinct scenery and character.

What You’ll See

  • Glacier-fed water with milky turquoise silt and sweeping braided channels
  • Massive mountain vistas, thunderous glaciers, and ice-choked lakes on select tributaries
  • Abundant wildlife including bald eagles, moose, Dall sheep on higher slopes, and black and grizzly bears during salmon season
  • Spectacular salmon runs from late June through August and migratory birds throughout summer

Trip Types & Difficulty

  • Mellow Scenic Floats: Calmer stretches ideal for wildlife viewing and photography
  • Moderate Whitewater: Sections of the Klutina, Gulkana, and Tonsina offer Class II–III rapids that are exciting yet accessible
  • Remote Expeditions: Multi-day journeys down braided channels and extended stretches of the Copper River for experienced paddlers seeking a true wilderness adventure

Best Time to Go

Late June through August offers peak flows, warmer weather, and prime salmon activity. Early summer brings higher glacier-fed flows, while fall provides a quieter experience with colder temperatures.

Safety & Gear

Expect cold, silty water year-round. We recommend layered synthetic clothing and quality rain gear. A properly fitted PFD is always provided and required. Weather conditions can change rapidly, and cell coverage is limited, enhancing the true wilderness experience.

Why Choose the Copper River Valley

The combination of glacial-blue waters, vast mountain backdrops, thriving salmon runs, and relative remoteness creates a rafting experience that feels both wild and quintessentially Alaskan.
